Why Trust This Comparison

FinStackk works in US accounting, tax, and compliance every day, so we know first-hand how much the wrong tool costs a growing business, in wasted subscription fees and in the hours it takes to migrate once you outgrow it.

Every rating, price, and compliance flag here was pulled from primary sources, vendor pricing pages and live G2 and Capterra listings, then verified before publishing. See exactly how we score, verify, and rank every tool in our research methodology.

AccountEdge Alternatives at a Glance

  1. 1. QuickBooks Online - Best for best for businesses that want the market default and the biggest accountant network
  2. 2. FinStackk - Best for best for U.S. businesses that would rather hand the books and filings to a team
  3. 3. Xero - Best for best for small teams that need several people in the books without paying per seat
  4. 4. FreshBooks - Best for best for service businesses that invoice more than they inventory
  5. 5. Zoho Books - Best for best for businesses under $50K in revenue, where it is free
  6. 6. Wave - Best for best for the tightest budgets, with a genuinely free plan

The best AccountEdge alternatives include 1. QuickBooks Online, 2. FinStackk, 3. Xero, 4. FreshBooks, 5. Zoho Books, and 6. Wave. Five of the six are browser-based cloud software, which is the main thing AccountEdge users are moving toward, and one replaces the software with a team that does the books for you.

Before comparing anything, settle one point of confusion: the AccountEdge sold in the United States is still very much on sale, and it is not the product that was shut down. We looked at published pricing, Capterra ratings with their review counts, what each platform runs on, and where the cheap tiers quietly cap you.

Search results for this topic mix up two different products, and the distinction decides whether you have a deadline or not. AccountEdge in the United States, sold at accountedge.com by Priority Software, is actively sold today.

As of September 2026 its site lists AccountEdge Pro at $20/mo, Network Edition at $30/mo, Hosted at $50/mo per user, and Connect from $15/mo, with no end-of-life notice anywhere on it.

MYOB AccountEdge, AccountEdge Network Edition, and FirstEdge in Australia and New Zealand are a separate lineage. MYOB's own decommissioning notice states these "will be decommissioned on 28 February 2026," after which company files "become read-only. You can view historical data but can't make any changes to your file."

If you bought from accountedge.com, nothing is being switched off and you are choosing on merit. This article is written for you. If you are on the MYOB product in Australia, your path is MYOB's own migration, not this list.

How We Evaluated These AccountEdge Alternatives

What separates the 7 platforms

Reached from a browser: 6 of 7

Carry more than 1,000 Capterra reviews: 4 of 7

Cap volume on the entry tier: 3 of 7

Have a genuinely free plan, not a trial: 2 of 7

Not software at all: 1 of 7

Every rating in this article comes from Capterra, including the incumbent's.

We started this research by looking at 20 platforms in total, including our own, before narrowing the field down to the 6 below. The deciding factors were not feature checklists. They were where the software runs, what the cheap tier quietly caps, and how much evidence exists behind the rating.

6 of 7 are reached from a browser, so they work identically on a Mac or a PC: QuickBooks Online, FinStackk, Xero, FreshBooks, Zoho Books, and Wave. AccountEdge charges $50/mo per user for browser access through Hosted.

3 of 7 cap volume on their entry tier, separately from any seat limit: Xero Early allows 20 invoices and 5 bills, FreshBooks Lite allows 5 billable clients, and Zoho Books Free applies only to businesses under $50K in annual revenue. 2 of 7 have a genuinely free plan rather than a trial: Wave's Starter and Zoho Books' Free tier.

4 of 7 carry more than 1,000 Capterra reviews: QuickBooks Online at 8,521, FreshBooks at 4,525, Xero at 3,324, and Wave at 1,730. AccountEdge has 93. 1 of 7 is not software at all. FinStackk is a service, which is why its price sits several times higher than everything else here.

The features converged years ago. Deployment and caps are what still separate these. Every platform here does double-entry bookkeeping, bank reconciliation, invoicing, and financial statements.

Once you are past that, the questions that decide it are whether you can open your books on any machine, whether the tier you can afford will still fit you next year, and whether you want to keep doing this yourself at all.

A note on our rating source. Our published research methodology takes ratings from G2 first, then Capterra, then TrustRadius, and labels a platform Not rated rather than substituting a figure from elsewhere.

G2 was unreachable while this article was written, so every rating here comes from Capterra instead, including the incumbent's. That is a deliberate departure, and we made it because one consistent source keeps the numbers comparable: 4.3 against 4.4 means something when both come from the same place.

Every rating cell names Capterra. Our own platform has no listing on any of these sources, which is why it reads Not rated.

What Is Small Business Accounting Software?

Small business accounting software records income and expenses, reconciles bank accounts, and produces financial statements. The dividing line now is deployment: desktop software installed on your own machine, versus cloud software you reach through a browser from anywhere.

Why Businesses Look for AccountEdge Alternatives

AccountEdge is a long-running product with a loyal base and a reasonable rating. The reasons people still leave are consistent and specific.

  • Mac-native support was abandoned This is the loudest complaint, and it matters because AccountEdge was for years the default accounting choice on Mac. Lonny J., an owner in alternative medicine, wrote on Capterra on April 3, 2024: "Accountedge discontinued native support for mac when it went to 32 bits and have been saying for about 5 years 'we are working on a native version.'"

  • Long-time users describe the Mac experience as emulated Jeff M., a president in marketing and advertising, wrote on August 13, 2025: "Used since 1995 but now PC clunky emulation of Mac. Only paid support now that never resolved issues."

  • Support quality draws repeated criticism Karen B., an owner in farming, wrote on May 27, 2024: "Recent telephone support is difficult to understand the language of the person, if it answers at all."

  • Working from a browser costs extra Pro and Network Edition are desktop and on-premise. Browser access means AccountEdge Hosted at $50/mo per user, two and a half times the Pro price, where every alternative below is browser-based at no premium.

  • The evidence base is thin AccountEdge has 93 Capterra reviews. QuickBooks Online has 8,521, FreshBooks 4,525, and Xero 3,324. That is not a knock on quality, but it gives you far less to go on.

What AccountEdge Does Well

It holds 4.3/5 across 93 Capterra reviews, and reviewers who have used it since the 1990s point to genuine longevity. At $20/mo, AccountEdge Pro undercuts QuickBooks Online, Xero, and FreshBooks on headline price, though Wave Pro at $19/mo and Zoho Books Standard at $15/mo billed annually come in lower still.

It is also full double-entry desktop accounting with no cap on invoices or billable clients, which several of the cheap cloud tiers below quietly impose. Its own site positions it as the best QuickBooks alternative, and for businesses that want their data on their own machine rather than someone's server, that argument still holds.

Xero advertises 90% off for six months for new US customers, FreshBooks 90% off for three months, QuickBooks Online 50% off for three months, and Wave 50% off Pro for three months. The regular price is what you will actually pay from month four or seven onward, so that is the figure quoted throughout this article.

Cons

  • Versus AccountEdge: Xero gives unlimited users on a $25/mo plan, where AccountEdge charges per user for multi-user access beyond the two-seat Network Edition

Cons

  • The Early tier's 20-invoice, 5-bill monthly cap is restrictive enough that many businesses will need Growing at $55/mo, which reframes the price comparison entirely
  • Payroll is a separate add-on rather than included

  • Time tracking and project billing built in rather than bolted on
  • Versus AccountEdge: FreshBooks is built for billing clients and chasing payment, where AccountEdge is a general ledger first and an invoicing tool second

Cons

  • The five-billable-client cap on Lite is a hard ceiling that catches people out
  • Every extra team member costs $11/mo on top of the plan price
  • A weaker fit for businesses carrying inventory

Pros

  • Free below $50K annual revenue, with 1,000 invoices a year included
  • Extra users at $2.50/mo, the lowest per-seat charge among the platforms here that bill for seats at all
  • Versus AccountEdge: a business under $50K in revenue pays nothing here against AccountEdge Pro's $240 a year

Cons

  • Its 680 Capterra reviews are the smallest sample of the five software options here, though still several times AccountEdge's 93
  • The revenue ceiling on the free tier means growth pushes you into a paid plan whether or not your needs changed
  • The product pulls you toward the wider Zoho suite

6. Wave

4.4/5

1,730 reviews) on Capterr

Best for: The tightest budgets

Starting price: $0

Best fit
The tightest budgets
Starting price

Verified ratings

Capterra 4.4/5 (1,730 reviews)

Pros

  • Free plan with no cap on invoices, bills, or bookkeeping records
  • Pro at $19/mo undercuts AccountEdge Pro, and the free Starter plan costs nothing at all
  • Versus AccountEdge: Wave's free plan covers unlimited invoicing at no cost, where AccountEdge has no free option at all

Cons

  • Bank transaction import sits behind the Pro plan, so the free tier means manual entry
  • Card processing at 2.9% + $0.60 makes it expensive for businesses taking many card payments
  • The thinnest option here for businesses with complex accounting needs

Switching from AccountEdge: What to Expect

  • Confirm which AccountEdge you are on first. If you bought from accountedge.com you are on the US product, which is still sold and still supported, so there is no deadline forcing your hand. Take the time to choose properly.

  • Your data sits on your own machine. Pro and Network Edition are desktop and on-premise, so the company file is local rather than in a vendor's cloud. Locate it and back it up before you touch anything.

  • Expect to export, not migrate. None of the platforms here publishes a one-click AccountEdge importer. Plan on exporting your chart of accounts, customer and vendor lists, and transaction history, then importing what the new platform accepts.

  • Decide what history you actually need live. Most businesses bring over open balances and the current year, and keep AccountEdge installed read-only for older records rather than migrating a decade of transactions.

  • Switch at a period boundary. Moving at the start of a fiscal year or quarter avoids splitting a reporting period across two systems.

  • Price the tier you will land on, not the promo. Four of these platforms are discounting heavily right now. Work out the month-seven cost before you commit.

  • Have these ready. Your AccountEdge company file and backup, chart of accounts export, customer and vendor lists, opening balances as of your switch date, and last year's financial statements.

All 20 Platforms We Researched

We researched 20 platforms before narrowing to the 6 featured above. The full pool was QuickBooks Online, FinStackk, Xero, FreshBooks, Zoho Books, Wave, Sage 50 Accounting, Sage Accounting, QuickBooks Enterprise, QuickBooks Online Advanced, QuickBooks Desktop Pro, MYOB Business, Patriot Accounting, Akaunting, TallyPrime, Vyapar, FreeAgent, Sage Intacct, Oracle NetSuite ERP, and Bookkeeper360.

We left 14 of these out. Sage 50 Accounting is the closest desktop-for-desktop replacement, but Capterra lists it from $124.42/mo, more than six times AccountEdge Pro, at 4.0/5 it rates below every platform we ranked, and it did not appear in any of the published alternative lists we checked.

Sage Accounting sits at 4.1/5 across 651 reviews and is largely covered by the cheaper options above. QuickBooks Enterprise, listed on Capterra from $2,210/yr, QuickBooks Online Advanced at $340/mo, and QuickBooks Desktop Pro are all variants of the platform already ranked first.

MYOB Business is the migration path for the Australian product, not a US purchase. Patriot Accounting and Akaunting are real but narrower. TallyPrime and Vyapar are built for the Indian market. FreeAgent, Sage Intacct, and Oracle NetSuite ERP serve tiers well above this buyer.

Bookkeeper360 is a bookkeeping service rather than software, and overlaps what FinStackk already represents on this list.

How to Choose an AccountEdge Alternative

Work backward from why you are leaving. If it is the Mac situation, every software option here runs in a browser and the problem disappears. If it is price, Wave is free and Zoho Books is free under $50K in revenue. If you want the safest choice your accountant already knows, that is QuickBooks Online. If you send high invoice volume and need several people in the books, Xero's unlimited users make it cheaper than it looks. If you bill clients and track time, FreshBooks is built for exactly that. And if the real problem is that you no longer want to do the books at all, that is when a service like ours makes sense.

  • Check the entry-tier cap. Xero Early stops at 20 invoices and 5 bills a month, FreshBooks Lite at 5 billable clients. These catch more people than the headline price does.
  • Count the seats you need. QuickBooks Online Simple Start covers one user. Xero gives unlimited users on every plan. That single difference can invert the price comparison.
  • Work out the month-seven price. Four of these are running steep introductory discounts. Budget on the regular rate.
  • Do the card-fee arithmetic. Wave is free but charges 2.9% + $0.60 per card transaction. At volume that is more than any subscription here.
  • Ask what you can actually export. Your AccountEdge file is local, and no platform here offers a one-click import, so confirm the new tool accepts your export format before you commit.
  • Separate the ledger from the labor. Software is cheaper. A service costs more because someone else does the work. Decide which problem you are solving before comparing prices.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Switching from AccountEdge

  • Assuming your AccountEdge is being shut down. The Australian MYOB product was decommissioned in February 2026. The US product at accountedge.com was not, and panic-switching on that confusion is the most common error on this topic.
  • Budgeting on the promotional rate. Xero at $2.50 and FreshBooks at $2.30 revert to $25 and $23. The discount ends long before your accounting needs do.
  • Ignoring the invoice and client caps. A $25/mo plan that allows 20 invoices is not a $25/mo plan if you send 40.
  • Migrating a decade of history. Bringing over open balances and the current year is usually enough. Keep the old file for the rest.
  • Switching mid-period. Moving halfway through a quarter splits your reporting across two systems and makes reconciliation painful.
  • Comparing software to a service on price alone. Our own entry price is five times AccountEdge Pro because the work changes hands. That is a different purchase, not a more expensive version of the same one.

Choosing Your Next Step

Five of the six options here are browser-based cloud software, which is the change most AccountEdge users are making, and if price, seats, or invoice volume is pushing you off the desktop, one of them fits better than we do. Wave is free, Zoho Books is free under $50K in revenue, QuickBooks Online is the most widely supported replacement, Xero gives unlimited users on every plan, and FreshBooks is built for service businesses that invoice more than they inventory. But if the real problem is that you no longer want to do the books at all, that is the purchase FinStackk represents, at five times AccountEdge Pro because the work changes hands. Either way, confirm the new tool accepts your AccountEdge export first, since none of these publishes a one-click importer. Our full process is on our research methodology page.

Editor's Note

FinStackk publishes this comparison and appears in it. We rank ourselves second rather than first, with QuickBooks Online at number one because it is the most widely supported replacement and the one AccountEdge itself competes against.

We are also the most expensive option here and the only one that is not software, and we have said so plainly in our own section. Our full process is on our research methodology page.
